I have this problem too. I had it also on my old ubuntu 11.04, but I resolved following the instructions listed here: http://askubuntu.com/questions/33773/what-to-do-when-skype-freezes-silently
The problem may be related to libpulse 32bit libraries, so the "dirty" workaround seems to remove read attribute to them, but I read that this causes many problems in other apps.
