COLD-OVEN  BUTTERNUT  FLAVOR  CAKE


2 sticks margarine
1/2 c. Crisco
3 c. sugar
1/4 tsp. salt
5 lg. eggs
3 c. flour
1 c. milk
1 tbsp. plus 2 tsp. Butternut
   flavoring
1/2 to 1 c. broken nuts
1/2 to 1 c. halved maraschino
   cherries (optional)

  Cream shortening, sugar and salt well.  Add eggs one at a time.  Add 
flavoring and beat well.  Add flour and milk alternately, ending with flour.  
Fold in nuts and/or cherries by hand.  Bake in a greased and floured tube pan 
for 1 hour and 45 minutes at 325 degrees.  Start in a cold oven.  Do not open 
oven door while baking.  Remove from pan immediately.  Invert on a wire rack to 
cool.  Slice very thin to serve.  It's tastier that way.  Hint:  Drain cherries 
and coat with flour.
