75 Year Old Orange Date Nut Cake
Time 70 minutes
Serves 12
Ingredients

2 sticks unsalted butter, softened
4 cups sugar, DIVIDED
4 large eggs
4 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon soda
1-1/2 cups buttermilk
1 (8 ounce) package chopped sugared dates
1 cup toasted pecans, THEN chopped (I chop by hand, think it's better
than bought chopped pecans)
4 teaspoons grated orange rind, DIVIDED
1 cup orange juice
How to make it

In large mixer bowl, on medium speed beat butter until fluffy
Gradually add ONLY 2 cups sugar, beating well
Add eggs, 1 at a time, beating until blended after each addition
In another bowl, combine flour and baking soda
Add to butter mixture alternately with buttermilk, beginning and ending
with flour mixture
Beat at low speed until blended after each addition
STIR in dates, pecans, and ONLY 2 teaspoons grated orange rind
Pour batter into greased and floured 10-inch tube pan
Bake at 350 for 1 hour 10 minutes or until sooden pick inserted in
center comes out clean
Bring orange juice, REMAINING 2 cups sugar and REMAINING rind to boil in
saucepan, stirring constantly, 1 minute
Carefully run a knife around edge of cake gently, punch holes in cake
with a wooden pick
Drizzle orange juice glaze over warm cake
COOL IN PAN on wire rack
When cool, turn cake onto plate or stand
