Chocolate Chip Cake

ingredients
* Cake:
* 1 pkg. chopped dates
* 1 tsp. baking soda
* 1 1/4 cup boiling water
* 3/4 cup shortening
* 1 cup sugar
* 2 beaten eggs
* 1 tsp. vanilla
* 1 2/3 cup flour
* pinch of salt
* Topping:
* 1/4 cup brown sugar
* 2 cups chocolate chips
* 1 cup chopped walnuts or pecans
directions
Combine dates, soda and water. Let stand and cool slightly. In large
bowl, cream together shortening, sugar, eggs and vanilla. Add flour and
salt, then stir in the date mixture. Pour into greased 9" X 13" pan.
Cover top of batter with brown sugar, chocolate chips and nuts. Bake at
350 degrees for 30-40 minutes.
