RAISIN CAKE

3 1/3 cups sugar
2 cups water
1 cup lard
1 box (15 oz.) raisins
1 tsp. each ground allspice, nutmeg and cinnamon
4 cups flour
1 tsp. baking soda
Mix 3 cups of the sugar, the water, lard, raisins and spices in a pan and
bring to a boil. Remove from the heat and let cool for 1 hour or more. Stir
in the flour and baking soda.
Pour into a greased angel food cake pan. Sprinkle remaining 1/3 cup of sugar
over top. Bake at 350 degrees for 60 to 70 minutes, until a toothpick
inserted cake comes out clean. Cool cake in the pan.
