i actually followed those instructions before posting here.  i could
get the index.php file to find everything and connect to the database,
but it would not find my app files when i tried to navigate to
mydomain.com/app1/posts, for example.  i ended up using symbolic links
to connect everything, and it seems to work pretty well.. see my reply
to brian to see more detail about that.  although i would be curious
to know what i missed because i'm sure what i was trying to do is
possible.. and there's nothing i hate more than an unsolved problem :)
