For me, I'm using the email component from the console shell. The console shell doesn't load up hardly anything automagically, so in my case it is required to make the call. This shell is then in turn called by a cron job to periodically check our ftp site for updated files and send out notifications. The logic for this check is done within a controller. So my shell loads the controller, then creates and loads the email component.
