Thanks for the help. I'm still not able to get usermgmt to work, but this gets me closer to an understanding of the workings of cake.
On closer inspection, it looks like usermgmt hasn't seen any activity in cakeForge since 2006. It would seem that cake has moved on and this module hasn't kept up. I originally downloaded it because it was listed in the popular downloads. I'm going to abandon my quest to get this one to work, for now, and try a different route. If anyone has patched usermgmt to work with the latest versions of cake, please let me know.
