as far as I know this is a "strict" issue and not related to a specific php
version
if you disable strict mode in your core.php you shouldnt get any such
notices regardless if you are using 5.4 or 5.3
correct me if I'm wrong
but yes, some code examples might be outdated
the documentation can be forked and edited, though.
