You can change it from the inherited model, but you have to do it in a method. The error is telling you that you can't directly alter the property, you must do it in a function call.
It adds a level of security to the properties. You have to specifically create a function to manipulate that property. So, if you move the function to the MyModel, instead of AppModel, then it should work as well. Also $_schema is a property of the Core Model class, so the fact that the AppModel can manipulate it, means that it is working correctly. Make sense?
