I am a not-so-experienced PHP developer with some Java/Struts MVC 
experience.  I too have found the lack of up-to-date documentation on 
Cake a problem.  However, the rewards for persisting with Cake are well 
worth it.  The learning curve isn't that bad once you have grasped the 
whole MVC thing.  Then PHP knowledge becomes more important (this is 
where I fall down).

This mailing list is a great resource, as is the IRC channel.  The Cake 
community will always try to help if you encounter problems.
