On Wednesday June 3, my wife and I headed up to the hill country to attend her
family’s annual July 4 family get together. Her parents bought an old cabin
in the mid-70’s along the Guadalupe River in Ingram, Texas.
That afternoon the assembled gaggle, old and young, met along the south bank
of the river, shared some goods times, hamburgers, and a few adult beverages.
Five of us families had to rent cabins that night about a mile upstream as
there was simply too many of us for their old “bunk house”. About 3:30 friday
morning my wife’s sister was pounding on our door saying their cabin already
had a foot of water in it and we needed to go to higher ground...the Guadalupe
was out of it's banks.
Everyone made it out unscathed. A niece and nephew each lost a car to high
water and a “not sure whose" old 4-WD mule went downstream.
The gist of this tale is...I had traded in my old truck for a new vehicle
several months ago and had not yet installed my VHF/UHF rig. And nope...didn’t
even bring and handle-talkie, which I always do...almost.
The old boy scout adage applies here, folks. “Be prepared”. I was not.
At the very least, I could have monitored the emergency traffic, and perhaps
even helped out in some small way. This won’t happen again!
