I log on qrz.com and replicate that to LOTW.  If I'm in a contest, I'll run 
N1MM to log, and then upload the file to QRZ and sync to LOTW.

Software is not a requirement; plenty of folks still log on paper.  Find what 
you like and do what works for you.
