Walter, the balloon with my callsign associated on wspr has been up 313 days. Launched from Tennessee, it crossed the equator (a very rare occurrence) and has been circling the globe down there. 17+ laps.
I hope you can get that kind of longevity. I’m watching/cheering from the sidelines. 73 Chris/AC5CM Typos brought to you by iPhone On Aug 15, 2023, at 09:55, Walter Holmes via BVARC <bvarc@bvarc.org> wrote: I love the responses.. 😊 they are all great. Truth be known, just about every component on the trackers we fly today, already come from China. We’re just sending them back to them. 😊 As far as the software/firmware, it’s Open Source, and published on multiple publicly accessible github sites. So that immediately gets around any potential ITAR restrictions that might come into play. Several other trackers are built in Turkey and other places overseas that also have been cleared for sending to other countries. So we’re all good. Now, that’s not to say that someone couldn’t do something very different and risk multiple violations of course, but I think we’re still several years away from the IC’s we use in or devices being manufactured in the US, if they ever do at all. And if they do, they will STILL be made over there as well, so there’s nothing secret about these. As far as the Mac machines, if anyone can make me a Mac that can come in weighing less than 12 grams, I’ll take a thousand of those right now. 😊 Walter/K5WH From: BVARC <bvarc-boun...@bvarc.org> On Behalf Of M Reiter via BVARC Sent: Tuesday, August 15, 2023 7:51 AM To: BRAZOS VALLEY AMATEUR RADIO CLUB <bvarc@bvarc.org> Cc: M Reiter <beachcat...@gmail.com> Subject: Re: [BVARC] K5WH-117, BLT-117 this actually brings up a good point, it is illegal to send devices with very current encryption to foreign nations, I know you would not think there is anything on a balloon that is privileged but there are many things installed on operating systems in the US that are not for export. I would think some care should be used to make sure that a balloon once captured by the Chinese or other nation, would not contain any proprietary software or encryption algorithms. just thinking out loud from a computer security point of view. marc KI5ZHO On Fri, Aug 11, 2023 at 11:26 AM Scott Medbury via BVARC <bvarc@bvarc.org<mailto:bvarc@bvarc.org>> wrote: The Chinese have it and are going to clone. It was certainly a very interesting flight with all the backwards trips it was making. 😊 As we close the books on this one, we are already testing more trackers as I type, as well as testing a NEW tracking/reporting application script for extracting and propagating the information into all the formal reporting sites. So much more to come. Below is a snapshot of the full flight. Many thanks for allowing the South Texas Balloon Launch Team participate in Field Day with you guys.
