Bovay has 2 different camps in it. Camp Tellespen is the Boy Scout side and
Camp McNair is the Cub Scout side. Boy Scouts has a Radio and Signal Merit
Badge. Cub Scouts doesn't really have anything similar BUT if you get Cubs
excited that interest will/should carry over to Boy Scouts.
Cub Scouts is 1st - 5th grade. Boys Scouts is 6th - 12th grade.
BVARC will cover Thunder Wolf District and Brazos District for the most part
There are several Scout leaders in Thunder Wolf who are Hams already. Steve
Whitcomb is one of them. I'm not sure of the others. I've been active in
Scouting (Thunder Wolf district) since Charlie started as a Cub Scout. He is
now in 7th grade and finished his 2nd Class rank in Boy Scouts.
If you need help contacting people in Thunder Wolf district, let me know. Some
of the Troops do participate in JOTA and JOTI yearly.

Subject: FW: JOTA/JOTI. - SCOTA  A very exciting event …..  THE SCOUTS HAVE
ASKED FOR HELP FROM AMATEUR RADIOThis is too big for any one club to handle
The Houston region Scout Council (Sam Houston Area Council) contacted me
today. Our Houston area scout council wants to add new elements to the program,
Mr Manning is especially interested in things the boys will not come across
anywhere else.He sees amateur radio as a prime candidate and requested radios
be set up at various camps and around town for JOTA.They also asked if Amateur
Radio Operators can be made available for various camp events throughout the
year.  They are very keen on having some radios at Camp Bovay (about ½ way to
Conroe) for JOTA.JOTA is the 3rd weekend of October and coincides with an event
called “Fun with Son”.  They expect about 800 cub scouts plus the parents for
the 3 day campout.I think they only need us for Saturday.  The boys will be
arranged in two camp areas and we will need to set up at both areas
simultaneously. The areas are about ½ mile apart (That will give us a little
relief for mutual interference.)  I am going up on Tuesday  to survey the site
for antennas, power, & shelter…… & will relay what I find.  In addition, he is
interested in knowing if anyone can host JOTA events around town so the older
boys can visit.  He also mentioned setting up at camp Brosig (near Sealy) and
camp Bovay several times a year for other scouting events.  Our presence at
Scout Fair last April was a success and got a fair number of visitors even
though we were outside. Now scouts are reaching out to us to partner with them
for the boys.  PLEASE RSVP to let me know if you can 1.       go to JOTA at
Bovay 2.       host scouts for JOTA in town someplace3.       interested in
other events  Spread the word to all the clubs in the Houston area (Sealy to
Clear Lake)  73Ralph  KE5HDF
