Gary,
Except for the business of spending more on the antenna system than the rig (
not ), I think that you made some wise choices.
There is good reason to get an AX.25- ready & dual band rig ( eg. APRS possible
) to be 'better' equipped.
Let me know if you need an A/B coax grounding switch or *good used PL-259s. I
should be getting these out of my 'laundry-size' bins tonight.
I need to dig through my TM-D700a supplies for that mini-din data connector
which is also spare. Unlike the extra as-is microphone, I did see it lately.
*What is a good used PL-259? The one with the coax insulator that can take high
soldering heat without drooping, and has already been used in a good
installation that just needed to be extended- or cut off for a different
connector eg. mini-UHF. I am not necessarily including the really old ones that
had bakelite insulation, usually olive-drab in color.

Guys, thanks to all for the advice. I've decided to get a Kenwood TM-V71A & an
Arrow GP 146/440 2m/70cm ground plane. I also obtained some Wilson 400 low loss
coax to feed it. This blew my budget of $200, but I liked the reviews and
features of the KW rig compared to the 2m. mono banders. The GP antenna was
only $50 new and looks very sturdy. Also is attached a photo of the stanchion
for my crank up hex beam mast mounted on the nearly cured, 3,000 lb. concrete
base. "In for a dime..."

Gigaparts will ship free over $100 I think.

A copper J pole is easy and cheap to build for a base antenna.

Gary. You can get a brand new 75 watt Yaesu FT 2900r from Giga Parts for
159.00. Still enough for antenna. Very solid radio and brand new. No sales tax
from Giga Parts but will have shipping cost.

Randy:

Thanks for the land line QSO OM. I appreciate the 2 Mtr.
rig endorsements and information. I'll check into the
Anytime AT5888, but will probably go with the TMV71A.
