Yes, UK licenses are for life.
In Stanley, Falkland Islands, I received license VP8DXL before the CQ WW CW contest in November 2004. It was picked up at the post office. My US call at that time was WD5DXL, extra class. This was arranged by Peter Short, a well-known “ham on the ground” living in Stanley, helping DXpedition teams. This makes me think the extra class license is not required for a UK licensee to get a US license. Might want to check with the ARRL VEC for an answer. 73, Keith NM5G From: BVARC [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of mark janzer via BVARC Sent: Wednesday, April 12, 2017 9:57 PM To: rodney martinez <[email protected]>; BRAZOS VALLEY AMATEUR RADIO CLUB <[email protected]>; BRAZOS VALLEY AMATEUR RADIO CLUB <[email protected]> Cc: mark janzer <[email protected]> Subject: Re: [BVARC] Advice for a UK operator Congrats on the General! As to your British friend, check out this FCC web page: http://wireless.fcc.gov/services/index.htm?job=about_4 <http://wireless.fcc.gov/services/index.htm?job=about_4&id=amateur> &id=amateur Until his UK license expires, he has reciprocity here. But the FCC encourages that he get a US license grant (take the exam...). As I understand, UK licenses don't expire? 73 Mark K5MGJ _____ From: rodney martinez via BVARC <[email protected] <mailto:[email protected]> > To: BRAZOS VALLEY AMATEUR RADIO CLUB <[email protected] <mailto:[email protected]> > Cc: rodney martinez <[email protected] <mailto:[email protected]> > Sent: Wednesday, April 12, 2017 5:36 PM Subject: [BVARC] Advice for a UK operator I am looking for advice for a long-time friend here in the US. He has been working here legally for many years from the United Kingdom (Britain), and served as a radio operator in the Royal Signal Corps across the pond. He has the highest rating they offer in amateur radio over there (which should equate to Extra here, I presume), but has no plans to return there unless tied up and thrown in the bilge. He wants to get licensed here in the US. In order to become an Extra here in US, I am assuming he will have to take the same test? Any advice will be surely appreciated. He and I own a collection of British PRC-320 military surplus backpack HF units just for fun.....look them up. Oh, and hey...I passed the General last night!!
