Sorry Scott, took that a different way than what you meant.  What you say is 
true, depending on your definition of the current Ham Radio operations scenario.

 

It is just that I run into NO CELL SERVICE quite a bit where I spend my OFF 
time…..

What do you mean by that?   Sprint and iPhone(ATT) are both cell based.

 

BTW travel to East Texas and in some large patches there is no cell or even AM 
broadcast.

That's a sad commentary on the state of Amateur Radio to me, because you're SOL

For the price of a screwdriver antenna and installation cost, you can remote 
your 7100 with your home QTH. You can run power and use your beam antenna. 

 

The remote head stays in your car and the main box stays at home. I do this 
with my TS-480 and RemoteRig equipment. Most people I talk with don't know I am 
operating Mobile Remote (MR).
