So, what's the best technical introduction to DSP? It seems like most general introductions start with things like FFT's and FIR and IIR filters, but when you look at actual implementations you're looking at things like Viterbi loops and similar that are not mentioned in the general introductions. I'm wondering how a DSP professional finds out about such things.

I've been looking at doing an exciter/detector pair (the idea that you'd add up or down converters, power amplifiers, and various cetera to turn those into a transceiver for whatever band you had in mind because all that other stuff is a lot easier to design and construct than the exciter and the detector) and I'm already resolved to doing a bunch of VHDL or Verilog for it, even if I haven't progressed beyond the "find some parts that might be suitable and sketch up some ideas" stage.

Yeah, I get it about the cost, but it's
worth it to some. I'm in this for my
love of the hobby and DSP in general.
That may seem a bit odd, but that's
my gig. So, just finish the SDR project
and get on with it. It'll be worth the
trouble.

It seems to me that pretty much all of the SDR stuff is pretty high end stuff. I mean, the ANAN-10E is $1000 and you still need a pretty powerful computer to actually do something with it.

The SDR kit (the Peaberry) that's been 95% assembled on my bench for a couple of months now is even $200 and that doesn't count the hours and hours of surface-mount soldering it requires to build.

Gary,

Are you familiar with TAPR -- Tucson Amateur Packet Radio (Google it)

The have a group dedicated to HPSDR's....pretty high end stuff.

SDRers:

I would like to get in touch with anyone using Flex or ANAN SDRs. I am a DSP consultant and amateur radio enthusiast. If possible I would like to form a group of interested Hams using or wanting to use SDRs. My goal is to
educate, where possible, and gather information from amateurs regarding
their concerns or problems with high end SDRs.
