Hi Mary, There are myriad solar solutions out there, and many have gotten not only efficient, but actually useful. But, while a 22"x48" 160w panel will do an admirable job of hot-swap quick-charging 1800mAh 7.2V NiMH batteries under even cloudy skies, its hardly portable. It's all about what you want to accomplish. I'd be happy to elaborate, but a proper answer requires some more specifics, e.g., what is the voltage, capacity, and chemistry of the battery in question, what sort of radio are you looking to power, and under what conditions? One thing I can say right away, is that if you already have a "car charger" for your radio / battery, it might be worthwhile to take advantage of that conduit. That is, 12V battery -> car charger -> radio, with the battery acting as "energy ballast" for a solar panel.
