I think it all kind of depends on how you're making said contact.   Scheduled Q 
or one found on a spot there's a map and a way to figure out the best direction 
to aim.  Otherwise a general point in the direction you want to talk to and 
search or call CQ.

Such is the opinion of one who operates on a folded dipole and with the 
exception of Museum Ships Weekend, has never used a directional antenna.
