On rare occasions, my xterm disappears, and I find a ksh.core lying around. (Unfortunately the backtrace is nothing but ??.) I've noticed this for a long time, several releases at least.
When it happens once, it's not unusual for it to happen again a short time later. When it happened to me today, I ran sh in sh in hopes it would trigger again later and I'd see an error message. Sure enough: hostname$ pwd /tmp/ sh(69593) in malloc(): write to free mem 0x1aa3c522300[0..7]@96 Abort trap (core dumped) hostname$ Here are some factors that might or might not be related: - A lot of my shell history involved tab completing filenames containing Unicode, including double-width characters, which on its own triggers rendering bugs in our ksh - I use vi mode - I was very low on available processes at the time, lots of 'unable to fork' etc. This particular instance happened on a 7.5 box: OpenBSD 7.5 (GENERIC) #79: Wed Mar 20 15:33:49 MDT 2024
