>Category:      kernel
>Environment:
        System      : OpenBSD 7.2
        Details     : OpenBSD 7.2-current (GENERIC.MP) #913: Mon Jan  2

[email protected]:/usr/src/sys/arch/amd64/compile/GENERIC.MP

        Architecture: OpenBSD.amd64
        Machine     : amd64
>Description:
        Audio playback on USB headsets works as expected the first
        time audio is played. After playback is stopped, a couple
        of seconds later the kernel spits out the message:

                uaudio0: can't reset interface

        After this message, any application that attempts to play
        audio will hang. Meanwhile, the kernel will spit out
        messages like:

                uaudio0: can't reset interface
                uaudio0: can't reset interface
                uaudio0: can't set interface
                audio1: failed to start playback
                uaudio0: can't set interface
                uaudio0: can't reset interface
                audio1: failed to start recording
                uaudio0: can't reset interface
                uaudio0: can't reset interface
                uaudio0: can't set interface

        on repeat, as long as the program is attempting audio
        playback.

        Unplugging the USB headset while the kernel prints these
        messages on loop can cause the kernel to print garbage in
        place of the device name, or even panic (if timed correctly).
        I believe this is the same issue as described here:
        https://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/msg17695.html

        If sndioctl is used to set server.device=0 *before* unplugging
        the USB headset, then all goes well. However sndioctl will
        hang for ~15 seconds while switching the device, while the
        kernel continues to spit out those messages. Eventually,
        playback switches to rsnd/0 (which on my laptop is the
        built-in speaker.) Afterwards the USB headset can be plugged
        in again and sndioctl can be used to switch to rsnd/1, and
        playback occurs as normal. The second time playback is
        attempted however, the problem repeats.

>How-To-Repeat:
        1. Plug in a USB headset

        2. Switch sndiod playback to the USB headset. This can be done
           using sndioctl to set server.device, or on startup by using
           sndiod's -F flag.

        3. Start audio playback.

        4. Stop audio playback, and note that

                uaudio0: can't reset interface

           is printed in the kernel message buffer.

        5. Start audio playback again. This can be using firefox-esr-102.6.0,
           using mpv-0.35.0p3 to play a file, or using fluidsynth-1.1.9p1
           to play a MIDI file.

        6. Notice that the kernel is repeatedly printing messages as above.

        7. Unplug the USB headset while the kernel is repeatedly printing
           said messages. This can cause the kernel to print garbage in
           place of the device name ("uaudio0"), or even panic if timed
           correctly (it is not difficult to time it correctly and cause
           a panic to occur).

        The laptop is an LG Gram 16Z95P-K, the USB headset is a
        Plantronics Blackwire 3220. I am running a -current snapshot,
        although the same problem did occur on 7.2-stable. The
        contents of /etc/sysctl.conf are:

                kern.audio.record=1
                hw.smt=1
                kern.shminfo.shmall=6291456
                kern.shminfo.shmmax=999999999
                kern.shminfo.shmmni=2048
                kern.bufcachepercent=90
                kern.somaxcon=2048
                net.inet.udp.recvspace=262144
                net.inet.udp.sendspace=262144
                net.inet.icmp.errppslimit=1000

        although the issue can be reproduced with an empty /etc/sysctl.conf.

>Fix:
        For some reason, the issue seems to disappear completely if the kernel
        is compiled with -DUAUDIO_DEBUG. I discovered this by fetching the
        latest sources from cvs and building a custom kernel config with
        option UAUDIO_DEBUG. I installed the new kernel without building
        the userland (so the userland is from the snapshot while the kernel
        is built from cvs HEAD, probably not a good idea.) The contents of
        the config file are:

                include "arch/amd64/conf/GENERIC.MP"

                options UAUDIO_DEBUG

        except there is a blank line at the start, per config(8).

I would just like to add that this is my first time reporting bugs in
open-source software like this, and that if I am being obtuse or stupid,
it is not on purpose.
