Architecture: OpenBSD.amd64 Machine : amd64 >Description: The realtime clock in my vmm(4) virtual machine suffers from low precision, such that thousands of calls to clock_gettime(2) may return the same time, before the clock jumps by a few milliseconds. This seems to be a mistake in tsc to nanosecond conversion. My virtual machine runs OpenBSD 6.6 i386 and chooses pvclock(4) as the timecounter. The host runs OpenBSD 6.6 amd64. Before I upgraded to OpenBSD 6.6, my virtual machines never had the correct time. The emulated i8254 pit in vmd(8) is too slow and fires only 50 interrupts per second, but OpenBSD and Alpine Linux expect 100 Hz interrupts, and Void Linux expects 1000 Hz. My clocks in OpenBSD and Alpine ran at half speed (1 second = 2 real seconds). With OpenBSD 6.6, the virtual OpenBSD now uses pvclock(4), so the virtual clock runs at the correct speed, but with less precision than the host clock. >How-To-Repeat: 1. Create virtual machine with vmd(8) in OpenBSD 6.6 amd64. 2. Install OpenBSD 6.6 in virtual machine. 3. Check sysctl kern.timecounter in vm: it chooses pvclock(4). 4. Repeatedly call clock_gettime() to check the precision. Whether kern.timecounter chooses pvclock(4) might depend on the hardware. With my AMD processor, host OpenBSD chooses tsc, but virtual OpenBSD doesn't list tsc as a choice, and virtual Linux fails to calibrate the tsc using the broken i8254 pit. "rdtsc" works inside the virtual machine, but the guest kernel seems unable to measure the tsc rate of my AMD processor. The result seems to get shifted right too far by 32 bits, so the tsc delta becomes zero, and the clock seems stuck at when vmm(4) last updated the time page. This code for pvclock(4) in /sys/dev/pv/pvclock.c converts the tsc delta to nanoseconds and adds it to the system_time from vmm(4): /* * The algorithm is described in * linux/Documentation/virtual/kvm/msr.txt */ delta = rdtsc() - tsc_timestamp; if (shift < 0) delta >>= -shift; else delta <<= shift; ctr = ((delta * mul_frac) >> 32) + system_time; When vmm(4) provides mul_frac and shift through the time page, it seems to forget the ">> 32" in the above code, so the value of ((delta * mul_frac) >> 32) seems too small. The shift from /sys/arch/amd64/amd64/vmm.c is always -20. I adapted some code from OpenBSD pvclock(4) into a Linux kernel module, and used it to fix the clock in a Void Linux virtual guest (which had been using the broken i8254 pit). In the Linux module, I set "shift = 12", ignoring the shift = -20 from vmm(4).
