Sometimes the kernel crashes somewhere in the sis(4) network driver
when some network link activates in it.
I have a card that contains four ethernet (RJ-45) slots. If some
other host connects through any of those physical network slots
(I mean the cables are connected, but some actual network transfers
start), then there is a considerable risk that the sis(4) driver
crashes the kernel. This happens frequently enough that I can
reproduce it, but not every time (perhaps 30% of all tries),
and I do not know how I could always reproduce it.
Once the network link layer is right (the crash does not happen),
things are stable, until the other host gets shut down (or something),
after which the other host may crash again the host with sis(4) hardware.
Even if some network slot is the sis(4) card is working fine (and
doing some actual work), activation in other network slots may crash
the kernel.
>How-To-Repeat:
Boot the host A. Try to connect to the host A from another host B
through the sis network card in host A. If the host A does not
crash, repeat this until it crashes (a few tries should be enough).
>Fix:
No idea. However I do believe this bug was introduced in the 1.88
revision (date: 2009/04/14 19:06:49) of /sys/dev/pci/if_sis.c and
the 1.29 revision (date: 2009/04/14 19:06:49) of /sys/dev/pci/if_sisreg.h.
When I took the slightly older versions (I believe it was 1.87 and
1.28) and compiled those into the generic 5.3 kernel, those compiled
okay and ran flawlessly. I have not tried this with 5.4 though.
