Indeed, I had an error because I use the following in tests to avoid
errors for image files not found:
\renewcommand{\includegraphics}[1]{\fbox{FIG \detokenize{#1}}}
When I protect everything there is no error even with the above
redefinition, so maybe it is more robust to protect.
