It should be fixed in the recent commit today (a2c3ba8ca7f817e08f81d9e).
It will also be updated shortly at ftp.gnu.org/gnu/texinfo.  Please let
us know if there any further problems.

As you say, there is rarely a problem with using newer versions of texinfo.tex
with different versions of the rest of Texinfo.
