I'm building in the es directory (for Spanish, as you guessed) and for some reason, the texi2dvi output said it was loading es/../maxima.aux. I removed that file and now everything is working again. I have no idea why it does that or how it got into that state, especially since the English version (in es/..) builds just fine. This is something to take up on Maxima's mailling list.
