Thanks, I didn't really know what to look at for information on portable use of tar. I checked the FreeBSD man page for "tar" and that was about it. The POSIX tar specification is very rudimentary and only uses the "bundled" format and also marks it as LEGACY. We use tar cf and tar xf in texi2dvi.
