It's a bit more conservative than what you proposed. (I haven't tested

We tested the0001-Retry-file-creation-more-aggressively.patch for a
customer and found it was possible to cause tar to hang indefinitely
while extracting one of the test files from the go test suite.
Yes, I also found problems with that patch, and installed updated fixes
in June:

Please give these fixes a try, as they fix a related bug I found when
looking at your patch.
