I have an old system that cannot be upgraded beyond Linux 2.6.32, and have discovered tar 1.33 and 1.34 fail to extract symlinks correctly.
The error "Cannot change mode to rwxrwxrwx: Too many levels of symbolic links" is shown instead. Downgrading (and rebuilding) 1.32 restores functionality.
