Thanks Paul for getting back to me. I thought it was odd and dug a little 
deeper and these first 3 tapes were not Tar so hopefully the client can figure 
out how to use dd to dump all files to disk!  : D

I'm surprised, as I just now created a tar archive with tar 1.26 and
extracted it with tar 1.23, and there was no problem.

I expect we'll need more details to know what the issue is. It might
have nothing to do with the tar version.
