Okay, may very well be, although I never heard of it.

That doesn't change the fact that this is extremely surprising behavior
that really shouldn't be default ("principle of least surprise").
To reemphasis this: It's not just that tar will do network connections,
it will do them based on the filename one tries to unpack.
