Hi Paul,
thanks for your fast answer.

I see three reasons this request should have low priority:

ok, didnt expect this.
(2) You should be able work around the problem by hand reasonably easily
(your email gave one good way to do it).
if you mean repacking on Linux then yes - but that is a nasty task.
(3) File systems lacking symlinks are lower priority for the GNU project.
Perhaps if somebody wanted to take the time to write the code, and
demonstrate somehow that the changes are secure, it might happen. But I
wouldn't want to be that somebody.
ok, got it. So you expect that I (or someone else who is after such
option) comes up with a patch - fair enough. One thing though would be
nice: if you could give kinda helping hand, and post how you would like
to have it implemented, which functions in which files to modify, etc.;
that would be really great - if that isnt too much work for you given
that you might be very familiar with the code, and if your time allows ...
on the other side that doesnt mean that I then sit down right now and
start working on a patch (because my time probably doesnt allow since I
have never looked at the tar code, and might need more time than someone
familar with the code) ...
thanks again!
Günter.
