I reported this bug in the gparted bug tracker but it appears to be a bug in parted: Gparted does not detect ANY partitions because one of them is outside the disk. However, partitions DO GET detected with other programs such as Disk Utility. I also tried the command suggested by the Gparted developer "parted /dev/sda unit s print" and it displays the message "Error: Can't have a partitions outside the disk"
