By default, it's the same as the make that was invoked at the top-level, as
documented

but the makefiles could always change that, eg
[https://github.com/buildroot/buildroot/blob/master/package/Makefile.in#L23C1-L24C74
here].  That doesn't seem to actually change it, copying snippets of that code
into a simple example and adding printf debugging with $(info).
