.PRECIOUS: %.o has the desired effect when a related implicit rule is used. For example, the following marks hello.x and hello.q as precious. .PRECIOUS: %.x %.q all: hello.x %.x: %.q; $(info $@ from $<) %.q:; regards, Dmitry
