Sorry, I thought there was a way to do it via configure but I see there was not (easily). I've made a change that causes GNU/Hurd to not use the mkfifo()-based jobserver, and go back to using pipe(). I am not sure if there is an alternative, or what to do about Cygwin. I haven't been able to create any test environments that can reproduce these issues so I don't know what the actual problem is.
