Ah, thanks, I did skip it. Shouldn't the 'make' build procedure be
smart enough to figure this one out on its own?
Anyway, I did a 'make update' and the process went a bit further. It
then hung after asking:

I typed 'yes', and then typed 'yes' a few times more after similar
questions (shouldn't this all be automated too?) and eventually got
something to build.
The resulting 'make' did not have the bug I was looking for, so this was
all a red herring for me, but I hope the build glitches I've reported
can be fixed so that the next potential contributor isn't put off by them.
