Which tool-chain did you use to compile make ?
If you used the HP-UX native compiler, then your suggestion is
plausible; try building using gcc (build *it* first, using your old
working gmake, if necessary ...) and see if that makes a difference.
Otherwise, if you already did build with gcc, I doubt a c99 conformance
issue could be relevant.
