In this thread: http://lists.gnutls.org/pipermail/gnutls-devel/2013-September/006453.html
and specifically in this message and its followups: http://lists.gnutls.org/pipermail/gnutls-devel/2013-September/006460.html there's evidence that GNU Make no longer treats suffix rules with prerequisites "as normal files with funny names", as described in the manual. Did the behavior indeed change, and if so, in what version of Make? I couldn't find anything in NEWS, FWIW.
