Are you running on a 64-bit Windows OS? Cygwin's process creation on
64-bit Windows is currently ~6
times slower than on 32-bit Windows. On 32-bit Windows, Cygwin's
process creation performance is ~3
times slower than Microsoft's Interix (SFU/SUA). It might be best to
treat this as a Cygwin issue rather
than a GNU make issue. I've been meaning to look into why Cygwin is
performing so poorly here, but
haven't been able to scrape together time to do so.
