Details:

Here is a small make file that exhibit some sort of a memory corruption
leading to the crash

I use plain vanilla debian etch with libc6 2.3.6.

Just run the attached make file twice to trigger the bug

.PHONY: all

all: bug.crash

%.bug(*.txt) :
       @echo whatever > x1.txt
       @echo whatever > x2.txt
       ar Srv bug.bug x1.txt x2.txt
       rm -rf x1.txt x2.txt

%.crash : %.bug(*.txt)
       @echo CRASH condition ready, just re-run
