You can probably get by with an older automake.  Automake has the nasty
habit of hard-coding its version string into the generated files; to
overcome that, you can try 'autoreconf --force' to do a clean build from
scratch rather than an incremental build, since it is only the
incremental builds that are picky about versioning.
