Otherwise download ftp://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/m4/m4-1.4.16.tar.gz, unpack it, configure with: $ ./configure --prefix=$HOME --program-transform-name='s|^|g|' $ make all install $ export M4=$HOME/bin/gm4 And try building flex again.
