c2 have to be two distinct tokens; it would be prohibitive to have to define all of c c1 c2 c4 c8 c16 c32 c64 c128 c' c'1 c'2 c'4 cis? cis?1 ... separately. Having spaces count as an additional token would make it troublesome to deal with durations like \breve . Yes, it can be a source of entry errors.
