I was rather thinking of an optically uniform spacing - In my opinion, if both cancellations of flats and cancellations of sharps occur in a piece, I wouldn't like to cancellations of sharps give a compressed overall impression compared to cancellations of flats. But, of course, whatever we can do in the current LilyPond version will be a compromise of some sort.
