Thank you. In my example, the NullVoice is inside a Staff, and the NullVoice contains the very same notes as the displayed Voice, so I don't think that passage in the NR explains the problem. I am also following the NR on the use of accidentalStyle: "There are many different conventions on how to typeset accidentals. LilyPond provides a function to specify which accidental style to use.
