I believe both 1713 and 1546 are symptoms of the same problem: the
distance by which notes are shifted doesn't depend on their size (yes,
it's that stupid).
I was investigating this with Łukasz, but our work spun off into
changing do {} while(flip d) into for_UP_and_DOWN.
However, i remember that David was on it, too - if that's true, some
serious improvements may appear.
