it was a bit more subtle than that: AFAIK 'make clean' does work, but the first fix I made was to run make clean *after* testing each patch. That meant that there was no make clean after building current master, so this patch died.
Mike added a make clean to the *beginning* of testing each patch, and Patchy accepted it without further problem.
